Radio Newyork International was the name of a pirate radio station which broadcast from a ship anchored in international waters off Jones Beach, New York, USA in 1987 and 1988. The history of Radio Newyork International (RNI) is linked with Radio Caroline, the Principality of Sealand and radio station WBCQ. In 1964 Radio Caroline began broadcasting to the United Kingdom from a ship anchored in international waters. The single station soon became joined by another to form a north and south network. Following British legislation in 1967, Radio Caroline was soon reduced to a single ship station which eventually sank in 1980. In 1983 the station returned with the help of a marketing company in New York and provisional assistance from the manager of Wolfman Jack. However, its main source of funding came from a notorious con-man named James Ryan, who was subsequently imprisoned following a Radio Caroline federal court case in Philadelphia, USA. A second offshore station called Laser 558 soon followed the return of Radio Caroline, and it was also interconnected to the same people in the USA who had brought about the new Radio Caroline station.
