Author Information

Albert A. Smith, Jr. has more than 35 years experience in radio frequency engineering and electromagnetics. During his career at the IBM Corporation, he performed theoretical and experimental investigations in areas such as wave propagation, antennas, radio noise, lightning effects, electromagnetic data security, TEMPEST, and the biological effects of non-ionizing radiation. As a senior engineer at the IBM Electromagnetic Compatibility Laboratory, Poughkeepsie, New York, he was responsible for the electromagnetic compatibility of IBM's large computer systems, including the design of the IBM Poughkeepsie Open Area Test Facility for measuring electromagnetic radiation from large systems. Mr. Smith has made fundamental contributions to the theory of the coupling of electromagnetic fields to transmission lines, the characterization of electromagnetic measurement sites, and antenna calibration. A Fellow of the IEEE, he is also associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Electromagnetic Compatibility and past chairman of the IEEE Technical Committee on Electromagnetic Environments. Mr. Smith is the author of the book, Coupling of External Electromagnetic Fields to Transmission Lines (first edition, John Wiley & Sons, New York, 1977; second edition, Interference Control Technologies, Gainesville, Virginia, 1987) and coauthor of Measuring the Radio Frequency Environment (Van Nostrand Reinhold Company, New York, 1985). He has published more than 20 technical papers.
