Overview

You can do a lot with the verses in this little book. You can read them silently, or recite them aloud. You can learn them by heart so that you will have them when you perhaps will need them most. You can find joy in them while sitting in the park surrounded by nature, and you can find comfort in them when curled up in bed with dimmed lights. As a child, I was too young to relate to many of the verses of the Quran, so I did not read it. But my mom, a Muslim artist, and my dad, a Muslim psychiatrist, both thought a lot about Islam and human development. So when my parents saw that even as children, we felt the sacredness and power of prayer, they used the spiritual atmosphere that forms during prayer to teach Islamic family values in a way that only the Quran and prayer can teach them. For this reason, my dad read both the message of the Quran to my siblings and me, both in Arabic and English. He selected verses to guide us from adulthood through adulthood. These are the kind of verses we chose for this book. And I still recite these verses in both Arabic and English when performing Salah today. Based on verse 41:3 of the Quran ( A book of verses explained in detail. A Quran in Arabic, for people who know. ), I think that we do not have to read and recite the Quran exclusively in Arabic if we do not know Arabic. But, also based on 41:3, when we want to focus on a verses we should study the Quran in Arabic. I know how to study the Quran in Arabic. But I would not say that I know Arabic. So I read the message of the Quran is English, and as verses grab me, it is then that I read the verse in Arabic. I then use what I learned in Arabic to help me write commentary for my books and blog, to improve the English translations of our complete Qur'an translation, and to improve Quranic Verses for Young and Old Souls. I first learned how to study the Quran when I began attending the Atlanta Masjid of Al-Islam, and the Mohammed Schools. To learn more, I travelled to Damascus, Syria to study with a personal tutor (although a good word for word Quran website like corpus.quran.com along with a comparative Quran translation website like islamawakened.com would have done the job). After two years in Syria, I taught translation around the world, as well as here in the United States. I later published an English translation of the Quran with other members of the Imam W. Deen Mohammed Community. I hope you enjoy the book and I look forward to hearing some of you recite the verses in English. Enjoy. And Peace be upon you. -A.L. Bilal Muhammad (Atlanta, GA Dec. 2014)
