Judith Butler es profesora de Retórica y Literatura Comparada en la Universidad de California (Berkeley), además de una de las figuras relevantes de la filosofía post-estructuralista. Es sin duda una de las filósofas más influyentes e inspiradoras en el campo de los estudios de género. Su libro El género en disputa (Paidós, 1990) está considerado la obra fundadora de una teoría sobre la homosexualidad y es ya un texto clásico dentro de la teoría feminista. Butler sobrepasa el género y afirma que el sexo y la sexualidad, lejos de ser algo natural, son, como el género, algo construido. Llega a esta conclusión basándose en las teorías de Freud y sobre todo de Lacan. Ha publicado también, entre otros títulos, Mecanismos psíquicos del poder (1997), Excitable Speech (1997) y El grito de Antígona (2000). Judith Butler is a Professor of Rhetoric and Comparative Literature at the University of California (Berkeley), as well as one of the leading figures in post-structuralist philosophy. She is undoubtedly one of the most influential and inspiring philosophers in the field of gender studies. Her book Gender Trouble (1990) is considered the foundational work of queer theory and has become a classic text within feminist theory. Butler goes beyond gender, arguing that sex and sexuality, far from being natural, are, like gender, socially constructed. She reached this conclusion based on the theories of Freud and especially Lacan. She has also published, among other titles, The Psychic Life of Power (1997), Excitable Speech (1997), and Antigone's Claim (2000).
