OverviewFor too long, history books have been written in silence, leaving generations of queer people to face the pain of isolation and erasure. Shattering that myth, this beautifully illustrated volume uncovers a hidden legacy of love, survival, and community across the Massachusetts North Shore. Tracing a powerful story from early colonial suppression to the vibrant, hard-won liberation of the modern era, this book offers an unprecedented archive of regional LGBTQ+ history. Within its pages, readers will find a deeply researched narrative alongside a groundbreaking collection profiling over 150 people and groups who built and sustained this diverse community. Brought to life with over 275 stunning color and black and white images, the text illuminates the clandestine passions and everyday bravery of both unsung heroes and legendary figures. You will discover the fiercely protected private worlds of literary giants like Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Ralph Waldo Emerson; explore the visionary, underground coastal enclaves of John Hays Hammond Jr. and Henry Davis Sleeper; and celebrate the trailblazing modern triumphs of history-makers like Governor Maura Healey. Jim Moser, the filmmaker and historian who directed the award-winning Through a Rainbow Lens project, doesn't just chronicle the past; he uncovers a lineage of resistance. Far more than a simple collection of biographies, this work serves as an essential, immersive historical record. It is a profound testament to the extraordinary individuals who dared to live authentically, directly challenging the forces of erasure to prove that queer people have thrived on this rocky coast for 400 years. Your lively writing vividly captured the North Shore's queer ancestors. Thank you. You made them come to life for me."" - Gordene MacKensie, co-producer of Gender Talk ""A compelling and sensitive recounting of the North Shore's hidden queer history. Entertaining stories that will make you laugh, cry, and feel proud."" - Pat Gozemba, Co-founder of The History Project ""Queer Heroes of the North Shore is both a mirror and a megaphone, reflecting lives too often erased while amplifying stories that demand to be honored. This book matters now because visibility is not a luxury; it is a lifeline!"" - Rev. Dr. Andre K. Bennett, Zion Baptist Church ""At a terrifying moment when hard-won rights are being legislatively dismantled, and queer narratives are being scrubbed from our schools, this book stands as a defiant, necessary act of preservation. By amplifying the voices of the North Shore's past, it proves that while laws may be repealed, the truth of our resilience-once witnessed and written-cannot be erased."" - Sherry Smiling Otter Gagne ""To win internationally was a dream realized for myself; to be etched into the history of the North Shore is a promise kept to those who come after me. I stand here as proof that Black Trans joy is not just a moment-it is a legacy."" - Love Miss Trans Global Diamond Chelsea Page Moses ""Jim Moser preserves the courage, suffering, and resilience of LGBTQ+ people on the North Shore-those who loved in hiding, endured slander, and paved the way for today's freedoms. That struggle has allowed me to serve openly as an ordained gay Christian minister. One generation calls to the next to continue the work of justice and freedom."" - Rev. Donna Spencer Collins MDiv. Groveland Congregational Church ""The sheer ambition of tackling the North Shore's Queer history on this scale deserves acknowledgement. Some of the figures included are household names worldwide, with many volumes devoted to their lives; others are remembered only in the memory of the community in which they lived and loved. The legacy of the North Shore's Queer heroes is long, complicated-and can even be intimidating-but as the author reminds us: ""the alternative is silence."" Moser invites the reader not only to learn about and celebrate Queer history but also to become part of a living legacy of Queer culture and to embrace the mantle of a Queer hero. "" - Caleb McMurphy, Director of Visitor Services and Education, Hammond Castle Museum ""Queer Heroes of the North Shore begins with a radical reimagining of queerness in historical context and catapults the reader through this history. We can see how the erasure and innuendo lead to pride and presence. This is a history for the beginner to learn how to read between the lines as real lives are examined in their glorious possibility, in a thread unbroken to this present moment."" - Tiffany Magnolia, Ph.D. Professor of English, North Shore Community College Author InformationJim Moser is an award-winning historian and filmmaker dedicated to preserving the queer experience.
