Overview

Designed with multiple readerships in mind, this book is valuable for the laboratory developer or the Professor who would like to recreate a similar suite of experiments for his students or the University. Furthermore, the book also connects with interpretations of the experimental data and links these results back to the fundamentals of quantum mechanics. The authors have created a self-contained resource that keeps experimental demonstrations of quantum mechanics, quantum information and the nature of quantum reality centre-stage and weaves the necessary mathematics and underlying theory when and where it is needed. This new edition features additional experiments related to quantum entanglement and non-local quantum erasure but has also restructured and improved the experimental optical designs of all experiments. Quantum imaging is also now included, and theory backed up with experiment. Instead of using commercial software all coding is now using Python, freely available, open source and more routine for students. A new chapter on programming FGPAs is also included enabling readers to develop the whole circuitry for use in single-photon labs on their own. Sample data has also been regenerated using the improved software and new CCU used in the book, improving data acquisition rates by a factor of a thousand. Key Features: Worked examples showing basic calculations on computing probabilities from projective measurements, effect of unitary operators on states, computing density matrices and expectation values, fidelities, purities. End-of-chapter problems Experiments can be recreated virtually using data from real experiments to manipulate, plot and compute expectation values, errors, density matrices etc. Each chapter begins with an introduction and placement of the chapter material in the wider scheme.
