OverviewDOTS (Directly Observed Treatment, Short-course) is the proven, cost-effective strategy recommended by the WHO for countries with limited resources. These regional guidelines seek to improve the quality of national TB programmes in the Western Pacific region, and to assist laboratory and programme staff in strengthening quality assurance of sputum smear microscopy, a key element of DOTS. The guidelines draw on the international guidelines for external quality assessment, and also include additional information on quality control in order to ensure routine monitoring.
