The Qualifying Examination is an open-book exam consisting of 265 short and long-answer questions covering the following subject areas: 1. Clinical Assessment and Suicide Prevention 2. The Counseling Process and Therapeutic Interventions 3. Loss and Grief Counseling Skills 4. Communication and Conflict Resolution Skills 5. Couple Counseling Strategies 6. A Working Knowledge of the DSM 7. Professional Ethics and Legal Liability 8. Fee Assessment, Professional Accountability, and Referral 9. Initiating Contacting, Determining and Maintaining the Length of Counseling, Evaluation of Progress, and Closure 10. Awareness of One's Own Significant Conflicts and Losses 11. The Counselor Response Examination: Phone Contact, Opening the Session, Deepening the Session, Closing the Session. The examination is open book using the exam manual also on Amazon, and the applicant has two weeks for completion with consultation available from an MSW instructor at the College of Mental Health Counseling (collegemhc.com). The examination manual is Effective Counseling Skills: the practical wording of therapeutic statements and processes.
