Qajar regular army uniforms (1807 till 1848)

Overview

This book looks at the uniforms worn by the Qajar era Regular Army from 1807 till 1848. Crown Prince Abbas Mirza, Governor of the Persian Province of Azerbaijan admiring the military reforms of the neighbouring Sultan Selim III, is credited historically as an early moderniser of the Persian Army, called the Nezam-e Jadid: New Order reforms. The first modern Persian Army, called the Sarbaz: Regular Infantry trained along European lines. The expansion of the Regular Army from the 1840s, in the era of Naser al-Din Shah, saw the simplification of its uniforms, and greater standardization with the introduction of the tunic, popular in most European Armies by the end of the Crimean War, and new headwear replacing the classical Qajar conical sheepskin with a busby based on European models. The end of this book looks briefly at later uniform developments from the 1850s, and post-1860 uniforms as these developed till the 1890s. Navy uniforms from the 1860 till 1890 era are also briefly overviewed for completeness.
