Author Information

Donald Herrera Kochackis has spent much of his life serving his country. On April 19th, 1949, he joined the U.S. National Guard in California. From 1952 to 1956 he was on active duty in the U.S. Air Force in the arctic region and in Europe. After that, he served in the Air Force Reserves until 1990, flying cargo planes (C119, C124, and C141). From 1966 to 1973 he flew support missions to Vietnam. In 1975 he participated in the Saigon evacuation, and in 1987 he was assigned to bringing back MIAs from Hanoi. His last wartime missions were carried out in Operation Desert Storm. Donald owned a vending machine business for many years. His creative mind came up with two types of security devices to protect vending machines, and he holds patents on both of them (patent nos. 4566296 and 4350032). He retired and sold the business to write a previous book, Prostate Cancer and Me. Donald came out of retirement to work as a part-time security guard at the San Diego Convention Center during the Republican National Convention (1996). In 2003 he became a full-time security guard to help his youngest daughter purchase a home (now paid off). Donald lives in Chula Vista, California, with his wife. They lost one son and have three adult children, two grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He has written and published three other books: the aforementioned Prostate Cancer and Me; Battling the Federal Gods; and Warning: City Coffers are Hungry. Pending releases include two more books based on his life experiences: In Search of a Thief and The Adventures of a Security Guard. He also plans to write a book of short stories. He is a recognized local author with the San Diego Public Library.
