Overview

Jesus died with a psalm on his lips. For millennia, humans have been shaped by the Psalms. And before the Nazis banned him from publishing, German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer published this book on the Psalms. What comfort is found in the Psalter? What praise, and what challenge? What threat? In Psalms: The Prayer Book of the Bible, discover the richness this book of Scripture held for Bonhoeffer, and learn to pray psalms along with Christ. First published in 1940, this classic reveals how the Psalms are essential to the life of the believer and offers Bonhoeffer's reflections on psalms of thanksgiving, suffering, guilt, praise, and lament. Now with an introduction by Walter Brueggemann and excerpts from the Psalms, Bonhoeffer's timeless work offers contemporary audiences ancient wisdom and resources for the living of these days. Includes a biographical sketch of Bonhoeffer written by his friend and biographer Eberhard Bethge.

Author Information

Dietrich Bonhoeffer was one of the most significant Protestant theologians of the twentieth century, a legacy sealed by his imprisonment in a German concentration camp and eventual execution. His resistance against Nazism and pivotal role in the Confessing Church movement have been key points of illumination for many on the nature of Christian political witness and action. Millions have been inspired by his rich reflections on the Christian life, especially his beloved works on discipleship and ethics. As a professor, seminary leader, and ecumenical theologian, Bonhoeffer's work also profoundly shaped academic theology, especially systematic theology, and the life of the church. Walter Brueggemann is William Marcellus McPheeters Professor Emeritus of Old Testament at Columbia Theological Seminary. An ordained minister in the United Church of Christ, he is the author of dozens of books, including Sabbath as Resistance: Saying No to the Culture of Now, Journey to the Common Good, and Chosen?: Reading the Bible amid the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict. George W. Sarris is an actor, author, narrator, and storyteller. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Speech from Northwestern University and a Master of Divinity from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. Sarris has been a principal spokesman in commercials, industrial films, and at trade shows for companies such as AT&T, American Express, BMW, Burger King, Pizza Hut, and Puffs Tissues. He has developed a unique one-man show and audio/video series entitled The World's Greatest Stories. Sarris is also the author of Heaven's Doors . . . Wider Than You Ever Believed! The book was awarded the Silver Medal in Theology in the 2018 Illumination Awards for exemplary Christian literature. Sarris is the narrator for the 2011 revision of The Holy Bible, New International Version by Zondervan Publishing House. He has narrated audiobooks on a wide range of topics and has consistently received high reviews for his work.
