Prudence: The Brave Little Bird

Overview

Prudence dreams of flight, though not the kind that requires wings, but rather flight into space. An aspiring journey about dreams, determination, and the power of sisterhood.   After breaking her wing as a baby, Prudence can no longer fly like the rest of her family, but that has never stopped her from dreaming of flight in a different sense. Every night, Prudence and her sister watch the stars and dream of becoming astronauts. When she learns that a comet will be passing overhead, she is determined to watch from the top of the Great Mountain, even if her childhood injury means flying is out of the question.    The hike won’t be easy, but as an aspiring astronaut, Prudence refuses to miss her chance at seeing Comet Paulina blaze across the sky. Telescope in hand, she sets out on the adventure of a lifetime, hopeful that her determination is enough to overcome the obstacles in her path.   Véronique Alarie and Gabrielle Lisa Collard write with a poetic sense of wonder and determination. They have chosen to donate their royalties to the Charles-Bruneau Foundation, as Prudence pays tribute to young cancer patients and their courageous siblings who accompany them in their fight.  Catherine Petit’s illustrations are done in bold blues and purples vibrantly represent Prudence’s courage and determination.

Author Information

After studying literature and journalism, Véronique Alarie is now an editor at Éditions Québec Amérique. She spends most of her days listening to the boundless flow of words produced by her sparkling children–who may have someone to take after. Prudence is her first title aimed at young audiences. Gabrielle Lisa Collard is an author, journalist, and freelance translator. Originally from Sherbrooke, she was the writer behind the blog Dix Octobre, where she discussed fatphobia, body diversity, and diet culture. Newly relocated in the Laurentian mountains with her family, she thanks life every day for having made her a writer.  Catherine Petit lives in Montreal, she used to work as a lawyer before realizing she is happiest when surrounded by paper and thoughts. In 2016, Catherine illustrated her first children’s book; since then, she’s illustrated more than thirty-five children’s books and is proud to say that being an illustrator is her full-time job.
