OverviewText in German. You can't sit on furniture in pictures. But they are involved as pictorial elements in the narrative strategies of medieval visual media. The different functions they take on are examined in the book within the framework of four art historical case studies. If one understands medieval visual media as configured semantic networks, each component, its positioning and design is important for conveying the content to the recipient. Like other objects, the furniture depicted is processed in the picture in the course of this generation of meaning. The analyzes in the book show how furniture is used as a media-specific mediator to make emotions and abstract ideas, characterizations of figures and actions, and chronological sequences in medieval narratives understandable in the image. In addition, the potential of digital art history for the research of this represented object category and the reasons why only selected aspects of the topic have been examined are reflected upon.
