Overview

This work collects together the names of Isis worshippers known from epigraphical evidence with the intention of showing the value of this underrated source when used systematically rather than episodically. The statistical study of the interest shown by women in the cult and of the diverse group of gods worshipped are only two examples of the research which this prosopography hopes to encourage.

Author Information

Fabio Mora is a graduate of the universities of Genoa (Classics), Milan (Ancient History), and Bologna (History of Religions), and has also studied at Lausanne, Louvain, Besançon and Zurich. He has published a monograph (Religione e religioni nelle storie di Erodoto, Milan 1986) on Herodotus' interpretation of religious phenomena. He has also studied the religious problem of silence in an edited volume The Regions of Silence, (Amsterdam 1987) and problems of ancient history in Contributi dell'Istituto di Storia Antica dell'Universitá Cattolica. Nello studio dei fatti religiosi del mondo antico si lamenta la scarsità delle fonti, ma spesso non si valorizza adeguatamente la documentazione minore, usandola solo in maniera episodica. Questo Corpus Prosopographicum Religionis Isiacae è stato raccolto per approfondire la comprensione del culto isiaco e delle forme che esso assunse in ambienti diversi attraverso l'esame sistematico e statistico della documentazione relativa ai singoli fedeli ed al loro interesse per le divinità. Gli abbondanti indici (onomastici; per luoghi e tempi; delle divinità; delle cariche ricoperte) sono intesi a favorire questo genere di approccio. La Prosopografia storica e statistica del culto isiaco offre un primo esempio di questo rinnovato genere di studi analizzando, nell'ambito di una più ampia riflessione sulle relazioni tra il cuto e gli ambienti in cui si diffuse, due aspetti particolarmente significativi: l'analisi statistica della distibuzione geografica e cronologica della presenza delle donne e dell'interesse per gruppi divini diversi arricchisce la nostra immagine del culto.
