From 1941-1945 he served in the Royal Air Force. He was ordained as a minister of the Church of Scotland in 1949 and was Minister in Kilwinning, Ayrshire, from 1949-1953. He was Assistant in Hebrew at the University of Glasgow from 1953-1956 and was Lecturer in Hebrew since 1956. He was author of I and II Samuel in the Torch Bible Commentaries.
