Prophet, Warrior, and Legend: Selections Exploring the Real Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Overview

Martin Luther King, Jr. was perhaps the most influential American, black or white, of the 20th Century. His powerful rhetoric continues to resonate throughout the American consciousness, but who was the real Martin Luther King, Jr.? He has been labeled a prophet, a warrior, a visionary, and an adulterer. Perhaps he was all of these, perhaps none of them. The anthology Prophet, Warrior, and Legend: Selections Exploring the Real Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. seeks to answer perplexing questions about a complex man. Through his own words in I Have a Dream, Letter from Birmingham Jail, Beyond Vietnam, and more students can see the passion with which he fought injustice. The work of observers and academics places the man and his actions in context. Written for the post-civil rights generations, Prophet, Warrior, and Legend encourages readers to view their frailties as assets rather than detriments. The book is an outstanding and revelatory reader for any course that asks participants to reflect on, and seek out, their own moral convictions and God-given responsibilities. Ronald E. Goodwin earned his undergraduate degree from Texas Lutheran University while serving on active duty in the United States Air Force. After his honorable discharge from the military, he completed both a master's degree and a Ph.D. in urban sciences, and an additional master's degree in United States history from Texas Southern University. Currently, Dr. Goodwin is an assistant professor at Prairie View A&M University. His research interests include urban history, the political impact of planning decisions on neighborhood development, and the historical evolution of Texas' black community as seen through Texas slave narratives.
