Proofreader: training and mediation

Overview

This book examines the professional proofreader - its practice, its formation, its field of operation, and the functional relations that configure its trajectory as a mediating agent. To bring this figure into focus, it is necessary to address text editing itself, not merely as a set of procedures, but as a domain of practice through which the profession is constituted and defined. At the center of our approach lies the concept of mediation, understood as inherent to both text editing and the activity of the proofreader. This perspective structures the work as a whole and is progressively developed across its chapters. The present volume is the outcome of a sustained trajectory of practice and reflection, within which our own understanding of the field has been continuously reformulated. This is a book for proofreaders - or for those who seek to become one. It is not a thesis, nor a grammar manual, nor a compendium of applied linguistics. Although it necessarily intersects with these domains, it does not aim to reproduce or exhaust them. Instead, it moves selectively across them, concentrating on those points where our inquiry has produced more stable and consequential formulations. Our contribution is situated in relation to a persistent lack of theoretical consolidation in the field of proofreading. In response, we adopt a deliberately abstract mode of exposition, including in matters derived from practice, in order to ensure broader applicability. Rather than multiplying examples, we privilege the articulation of conclusions that emerge from them. The work also incorporates elements drawn from our experience in the training of proofreaders, offering propositions that may be adapted to different institutional and professional contexts. In doing so, it participates in the formation of practitioners and in the gradual qualification of the field itself. Ultimately, this book seeks to advance the theoretical understanding of text editing, to support the development of its practitioners, and to contribute to the recognition of proofreading as a complex and structured professional activity, grounded in mediation and defined by its capacity to operate on meaning.
