Reviews

This is a unique and wonderfully imaginative book. The letters and responses are creative, witty, and quite funny. More than once, I found myself smiling while reading them. I think elementary age children (and adults like me who still enjoy children's books) will really get a kick out of this book. I, myself, plan to pass it on to my 11 year old grandson who I am sure will appreciate the humor and silliness. A fun read to be sure! From Kimberly Westrope Great fun for children and adults. This little book is full of goofiness, wit, preposterousness, and imagination. Each chapter contains enough silliness to entertain youngsters and enough unexpected references to keep grownups on their toes too. The author does not talk down to children but invites them to discover the key to the absurdity in each zany new episode. The witty black & white illustrations provide a perfect complement to the text. It's impossible to read this book without smiling. From Joko Laugh and learn something new. Professor Magillicutty's Guide showcases Joanne Blondin's quirky sense of humor. I laughed right out loud reading the vibrant descriptions of different wild animals and most effective hunting techniques. The illustrations bring the book to life. A fun read! From Cynthia Harris (AKA Oak Tree)

Author Information

Joanne Blondin wrote stories about her outdoor adventures and wanted to put them in a book. Friends told her that no one would be interested because she was not trekking in the Himalayas or Outer Mongolia. Then, a truly remarkable cat walked into her condo. That cat became the heroine of Joanne Blondin's first children's book, Matty, Detective Cat. Matty brought in slices of salami instead of mice; didn't move when a large German Shepard dog only a few feet away barked at her; and begged for chicken from her neighbor while he was barbequing. To emphasize how remarkable Matty was, she added some pretend characters: George and Charlie, arson investigators, Taylor, a chemist and Billy, her neighbor's brother-in-law to her story. Joanne Blondin's next children's book Professor Magillicutty's Dingle-Dangle Guide for Hunting Wild Animals is total fantasy. She wrote the first chapter for a class (Ten Stories in Ten Weeks) at Grub Street Writers in Boston. The prompt was to write a story in second person, explaining how to do something. Her story explained Professor Magillicutty's method for catching a tiger by the tail. In another story (She doesn't remember the prompt) Floral Bouquet thanks the Professor for his instructions. Floral wanted to catch a tiger but is ecstatic about the Burmese python she caught instead. A classmate suggested that the two stories could become part of a children's book. Joanne Blondin protested only briefly and spent the summer writing more stories for Professor Magillicutty's Dingle-Dangle Guide for Hunting Wild Animals. Anne M. C. Chavez is a self-taught artist, who honed her drawing skills when teaching Spanish. Rather than use the English word in a language class, she would draw a quick sketch. Sketches also helped students remember the Spanish word. Her artwork was use in games and teaching materials.
