Overview

Traditional digital video (DV) cameras capture images at the rate of 30 frames per second in contrast to film camera speeds of 24 frames per second (24p). New DV cameras are making it possible to shoot DV at the 24p frame rate. Since the 24p frame rate more closely approximates the look and feel of film, it is the speed of choice whenever a cinematic look is desired. 24p video also offers certain compression options that are advantageous to web and wireless delivery. 24p productions require special techniques all the way through the production, from preproduction planning through post and output. This introductory crash course in 24p video production is ideal for the student and new filmmaker. Each chapter is constructed to include techniques, examples, tips, and case studies. Field techniques include real-world setups (close-up, medium shot, wide shot) presented as demonstrations or tutorials. Case studies present profiles of people producing 24p projects. Software tutorials include step-by-step instructions that illustrate how to work with 24p material in NLE, compositor, DVD authoring, and audio applications.
