Overview

Excerpt from Proceedings of the Oxford Architectural and Historical Society, 1860 to 1864, Vol. 1 The personal character of our kings. As well as the times in which they lived, were not without their influence on the architecture of their day. The chief build ings of the time of William the Conqueror and William Rufus are the Norman castles, those massive square keeps which are found in all parts of the country. Henry I called Beauclerc, was a man of letters and of religion, and the chief buildings of his time are monasteries and churches. The civil wars of the time of Stephen called for more castles; many were added, and others rebuilt in his reign. Henry II. Succeeded by peaceful hereditary succession to the whole of the western provinces of France. The constant friendly intercourse with the people of those provinces could not fail to have considerable influence upon England, and this is shewn in the archi tecture of the period, the great time of transition from the Norman to the Gothic style.
