Not illustrated. 1899 Excerpt: ...is no reason why we should give ourselves up to idle speculation when the way out of the difficulty has been clearly shown to us by the State of New York in the creation of its Pathological Institute where, if untrammeled by traditional views, if fostered by a true scientific spirit, psychiatric science would promise to grow to what it should be. The immense scope of the work at such an institute is best shown by naming the different branches of science that enter into the sphere of its activity; here we find: psychology, psychopathology, experimental physiology and pathology, cellular biology, pathological anatomy, comparative neurology, physiological chemistry, anthropology and bacteriology. The work in some of these branches must necessarily be done at the hospitals; but even there, to be of value, it must be performed, under the direction of a specialist, by trained assistants whose methods should be faultless and beyond reproach. No valid objection could possibly be raised to the pursuit of such work by our assistants and ourselves even under conditions prevailing at present, but we should certainly not attach to our labors the intrinsic value possessed by the work of thoroughly trained specialists. In this connection I may quote the following passage from the report of one of the hospitals, received some time ago: The scientific work in the medical department is kept well abreast with the advance of the day...The pathological laboratory serves a most excellent purpose; it is of great value not only in the matter of diagnosis but in the accumulation of most interesting material.
