Overview

Prison Law is the leading text in its field. It offers comprehensive coverage of the substantive law, the Prison Rules, and the remedies available to prisoners, including complaints procedures, civil claims, judicial review, and claims under the Human Rights Act. Both domestic and international avenues of redress are explained in detail. The book covers all aspects of prison life, from categorization and allocation to living conditions, access to the outside world, transfer and repatriation, discipline, and the procedures governing the release of fixed term prisoners and those serving life sentences. The new edition has been completely revised and updated to take account of relevant decisions under the Human Rights Act and at the European Court of Human Rights. The changes to the life sentence regime and the prison disciplinary system, implemented since publication of the previous edition, have been fully addressed, and a new chapter on children and young people in detention focuses on the unique legal challenges presented by this class of prisoner.Critical analysis is combined with practical guidance to make Prison Law immensely useful to practitioners, academics, and anyone with a professional interest in crime and punishment.

Reviews

Review from previous edition Each and every prison library should contain this book. It is a neverending source of information and even inspiration and, even if it does not quite make the 'essential reading' list, then it should certainly be on the 'essential reference book' list Prison Service Journal The book manages to combine a comprehensive account of this very important, and at times quite technical, area of the law with high quality analysis of the law and the enforcement of prisoners' rights in both domestic and international law. Seldom does a text book provide so much factual information and academic commentary. Prison Law is a book without any serious competitor. Not only is it the leading authority in its field, but it is also a valuable addition to the literature on human rights generally Journal of Civil Liberties there is not a publication on my bookshelves more referred to than Prison Law Prison Service Journal
