Overview

This text offers a review of the genetic basis of common diseases, discusses relevant laboratory studies, shows how molecular genetic studies can be used in pathology, and emphasizes how molecular genetics are essential to contemporary pathology practice. The book is not intended to be a series of laboratory protocols, due to the existing books that approach the subject in that manner. Rather this new text presents the foundations needed in order to understand molecular genetic principles as they relate to pathology. Although some technical laboratory aspects will be presented, the purpose of such a presentation will be to provide the reader with an understanding of the principles involved in molecular assays. The end result is a book that is geared toward medical students, pathology residents, physicians, pathologists, laboratory scientists, medical technologists, and other scientists. Timely in its information and delivery this book has arrived at the right place at the right time and could be used as required reading for an educational course. The American Board of Pathology and the American Board of Medical Genetics have recently announced a new sub-specialty examination called ""Molecular Genetic Pathology"" that will be offered for the first time in November, 2001. Thus, the need for such a reference is already present.
