Overview

Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is a second-generation platelet concentrate widely used in endodontics for its regenerative and healing potential. It is an autologous biomaterial prepared from the patient's blood without the use of anticoagulants, resulting in a fibrin matrix rich in platelets, leukocytes, cytokines, and growth factors. These bioactive components play a crucial role in angiogenesis, immune modulation, cell proliferation, and tissue regeneration. In endodontic practice, PRF has been successfully applied in pulpotomy, apexification, regenerative endodontic procedures, periapical surgeries, and management of root resorption. Clinical studies report improved healing, enhanced bone regeneration, reduced postoperative pain, and favorable radiographic outcomes when PRF is used as a scaffold or adjunctive material. Its biocompatibility, ease of preparation, cost-effectiveness, and sustained release of growth factors make PRF a valuable alternative to conventional materials. Despite promising results, further long-term and standardized clinical studies are required to optimize protocols and validate its widespread clinical application.
