Pretty Is as Pretty Does is Dr. Murphree's first novel. The title is based on Great Grandmother Sophia's unusual sayings that influenced the family for years. When Jennifer came to live at her Aunt Caroline and Uncle Patrick's home after her parents' tragic death, these sayings also influenced Jennifer who was not only grieving but very angry. She lashed out at everyone, including God. Beginning her junior year, she got the lead part in the school play. She slowly began to soften in her attitude toward people because of the play. Marissa, the girl in the play, had horrible scars on her face but treated people in a kind and helpful way. Jennifer learned the meaning of Pretty is as Pretty Does. It was more than a pretty face but rather inner beauty and kindness toward others.

Dr. Murphree has written eight previous books ranging from devotionals, prayers, sermons to short stories. She is a retired high school counselor and a retired United Methodist minister. She has a doctorate in Public Administration from Nova Southeastern University and a ThD in Theology from Indiana Christian University. . She and her husband, Walter, have traveled extensively over the past 30 years.
