Pressure Dependent Phase Diagrams of Binary Alloys

Overview

Comprehensive 2-volume set, updated, and highly reliable p-T-x information -- in English for the first time! The p-T-x Handbook is the result of translation, technical editing, and updating of scientific work done worldwide, as compiled and evaluated by Yuri V. Levinsky, with a strong emphasis on work done in the former Soviet Union. Many of the p-T diagrams were proposed by the author and 40 are published in this handbook for the first time. The editorial work is the result of the activities of the Materials Science International Services, GmbH (MSI) team of workers, a group headed by Gunder Effenberg in Stuttgart. Effenberg's team, MSIT, involved workers in many countries, especially in active team in Ukraine. This is the first time a comprehensive p-T-x compilation has been published in English, and it has been updated substantially by the skills of Levinsky and the work of the MSI team from earlier editions published in Russian. Through the work of the MSI team of scientists, the p-T-x Handbook incorporates the judgment and evaluation of qualified professionals, providing an extremely high level of reliability. The Importance of p-T-x Diagrams: High-pressure and high-vacuum processing of metals requires knowledge of the fundamental equilibria and phases present at varying pressures and temperatures. One of the """"last frontiers"""" of classical investigation, variable pressure processing can result in loss of chemical elements, formation of new, high- or low-pressure intermetallic compounds, chemical gradients, etc. -- all of which can advance the discovery of new phenomena and new materials. Used constructively to """"engineer"""" a material, creative processing by varying temperature, pressure and time can result in truly novel advanced materials. For example, the discovery and development of processing to produce """"porous aluminum"""" was a direct result of studying high-pressure equilibria in hydrogen-metal systems. This """"floating aluminum"""" would probably not have been discovered but for the work of scientists in the Ukraine investigating phase relationships at high pressure and high temperature. Content Highlights: 12,000+ individual publications evaluated 1700+ pages of text, data, and diagrams 188 binary systems 1100+ diagrams 8-year update to the latest Russian edition Comprehensive 50+-page introduction to p-T-x diagrams Partial pressure of elements at various binary alloy compositions Thermodynamic stability equations High- and low-pressure phases identified, and structure defined Organized in alphabetical order Each system presented in a consistent format for easy location of specific information
