OverviewIn the last 20 years the newspaper industry has fundamentally changed, with profound consequences for the way news is produced, consumed and financed. How these changes came about - partly engineered, partly imposed, and often confusing - is the subject matter of this book. The story describes an unusual route into journalism, the change from analogue to digital at a regional newspaper, and how the era of spin led to the era of fake news, alt facts, fake history, and truth decay. The human cost of the introduction of new technology is considered: when a firm is dismantled those who invested their time and energy are left with complex and sometimes conflicting feelings which can be hard to navigate. This is the nature of the workplace when progress trumps the wellbeing of of the people who facilitate it. 'Press-Ganged' ends on a positive note, describing the birth of a new long-form regional newspaper, the Cambridge Independent, in the midst of the biggest revolution the industry has seen since the Gutenberg Press in the 15th century.
