Overview

Though the United States has been a relatively diverse nation, Americans have historically lived close to those who are ethnically and culturally like them. The unfortunate effects of slavery, Jim Crow, segregation, housing discrimination, prejudice, and bigotry have been key reasons for demographic divisions. While divisions remain, communities that were once monoethnic are experiencing changes that are enriching. The challenge for these communities is to work to break down barriers that prevent lasting authentic relationships resulting in spiritual growth. Churches in these communities are at a crossroads and face a choice: do they keep doing what is comfortable despite the changes in their neighborhoods, or do they work to resemble their neighbors? Preaching Without Borders addresses the challenges preachers face when they attempt to be faithful to the text while contextualizing it so that people of every nation, tribe, and tongue can be transformed by Jesus.

Reviews

"""With the foresight of a futurologist, the passion of a missionary, the care of a shepherd, and the cultural awareness of a sage, Ryan Roach reveals the hope and power of exposition that honors the Savior of the whole world. The double task every preacher has--to be both intercultural and transcultural--seeks the very goal of the gospel: that people of all nations might be blessed. This work gives the exhortation for making this a reality in every pulpit."" --Eric C. Redmond, Moody Bible Institute, Chicago ""Roach takes people on a journey, reflecting on Scripture and tradition, drawing deeply from his own experiences, to help preachers press into a kingdom vision of preaching the whole council of God, navigating through the problems created by racialization, in order to minister to all. This book will help you see the biblical impetus for cross-ethnic preaching, and some practical frameworks for doing so."" --Raymond Chang, president, Asian American Christian Collaborative ""Though some diminish the relative importance of sermons, I remain hopeful for how the Lord uses pastors and their preaching to build his church for his glory. I have witnessed how God uses preaching to unify a community, but a growingly diverse world can make this work challenging. Ryan Roach provides a wonderful gift to Christ's church in showing us how preaching helps the church to take part in God's reconciling work to build one new people."" --Dan Hyun, pastor, The Village Church ""Ryan Roach has provided an excellent tool to assist all preachers, from seasoned pastors and professors to the young seminarian, in adapting a more colorful and cultural approach to preaching. As churches become more ethnically diverse, it is important for pastors to shift from a culturally homogeneous homiletic to a multiethnic approach. Preaching without Borders will aid preachers in making that transition without sacrificing personal authenticity or scriptural integrity."" --Jesse L. Nelson, past president, Evangelical Homiletics Society"
