Overview

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is a tool that is used to help corporate teams work more efficiently and dating services match more effectively and much in-between. But can it be applied to personal spirituality? Monsignor Chester Michael believed MBTI opened new possibilities through needed self-awareness. With a foundation in the work of Carl Jung and Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, among others, Father Michael began exploring the connection between personality and styles of prayer. In 1982, with his assistant Marie Norrisey, they launched an ambitious project, which involved some 400 individuals, to see if different temperaments resonated with distinct approaches to prayer. Their discoveries, and the enthusiastic response of the project's participants, motivated them to publish their findings. For 30 years, their guidance on coming to prayer in an approach that aligns with individual temperaments has been the basis for numerous workshops and retreats and in spiritual direction of individuals. It has helped thousands, including those who may describe praying as difficult, dry, or rote. As a result, the board of the Open Door, which Father Michael founded before his death, offers a revised edition of the original work. The audience remains the same as it was when the book was published in 1991: anyone who seeks to deepen their spirituality, self-awareness, and relationship with God.

Reviews

Prayer and Temperament has been a great help to me, both when I was novice director at Holy Cross Abbey, and now as guest master at our retreat house. This book should not be read like an operator's manual but as a portal framing lived experience. From the foreword by Fr. James Orthmann, OCSO Holy Cross Abbey, Berryville, Virginia The Meyer-Briggs personality types help us learn to live life on life's terms by understanding how we get our energy, gather information, think, feel, make decisions, and view the world. This classic book takes the Myers-Briggs test one step further to guide us in our spiritual life to learn which prayer best connects us to God based on our personality type. Prayer and Temperament has been an invaluable tool for me personally and in spiritual direction since it was written thirty years ago. The Rev. Joanna J. Seibert MD Little Rock, Arkansas Prayer and Temperament is a book filled with wisdom and grace. I have recommended it to numerous individuals over thirty years - spiritual directees, counseling clients, and family and friends to help deepen their prayer lives. It is truly a wonderful resource to deepen any seeker's encounters with the Divine. Frank C. Bognar, M.A., D.P.A. Peace Activist, Retired Regional Director of Catholic Charities and Licensed Marriage and Family Counselor The first edition of Prayer and Temperament opened up windows of my mind to prayer possibilities that fit my personality. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a way to deepen their personal relationship with God. Jan Alkire author of Seeking Christ Through Friendship What a gift that the board of The Open Door is updating and releasing a 30th anniversary edition of Chester Michael and Marie Norrisey's book Prayer and Temperament! As a spiritual director, I have referred to this book for over 20 years to help clients find forms of prayer that fit their life and personality. Thank you, Open Door!
