She received her Ph.D. in Spanish and Literature from the University of Colorado at Boulder. She has post-graduate studies in Hispanic Linguistics and Phonetics from the Instituto Caro y Cuervoin Bogatá and the Instituto de Cooperación Iberoamericanain Madrid.
