Overview

This course will provide students with didactic principles and clinical practice skills for providing basic nursing care to pregnant client and the newborn, using Virginia Henderson's Basic Needs Theory to implement the nursing process. The content of the course will focus on meeting the basic nursing care needs of the pregnant client during normal Antepartum, Intrapartal and Postpartum periods as well as Physical Assessment and Basic Nursing Care of the Normal Newborn. Nursing Care for the Pregnant Client with Complications and the Newborn with Complications and Congenital Anomalies will also be addressed. The course content will also include the practical nurses role in Pharmacological Management of the pregnant client and the newborn. The course content is directed by the scope of practice defined in the Illinois Nursing and Advanced Practice Act of 2007 for the Practical Nurse.
