Overview

This course is designed to provide the student with didactic principles for providing basic nursing care for mental health clients throughout the life span. The content of the course will focus on psychological and physiological effects of mental illness: Nurse-Client Relationship, Common Mental Health Disorders, Depression, Suicide and Substance Abuse. The course content is directed by the scope of practice defined in the Illinois Nursing and Advanced Practice Nursing Act of 2007 for the Practical Nurse. 32 Hours Theory, 32 Hours Lab, 32 Hours Clinical PREREQUISITE: Admission the Practical Nursing program THEORY OBJECTIVES/THEORY PERFORMANCE CRITERIA: Upon completion of this course the student will be able to: Understand the role of the Practical Nurse as a member of the health care team in a mental healthcare setting. Use Florence Nightingale's Environments Theory in understanding the needs of mental healthcare clients. Describe the characteristics of optimal Mental Health. Explore approaches to interacting with clients with mental health disorders and substance abuse. Discuss common and adaptive behaviors with regard to the concepts on anxiety, defense mechanisms and the impact of stress. Identify phases in the Nurse-Client relationship and relate key concepts as they relate to therapeutic communication. Discuss the etiology, client presentation, nursing care and current treatment modalities of clients with common mental health disorders and substance abuse. Demonstrate an understanding of Nutrition and Diet Therapy related to disorders presented in the course.
