Author Information

Malcolm (Mike) Macfarlane has worked in large-scale commercial software development since 1966, with experience at Xerox, Gartner Group, Cadence, and Sybase -- as well as several start-ups -- in senior engineering, field support and quality management positions. At Xerox, as Principal Member of the Technical Staff, Mike helped develop industry-leading operating systems. Later, as Gartner Group's first employee, he built their first hard dollar subscription product and established their initial consulting business. At ECAD and Cadence, Mike was first VP of Marketing, then Senior Director of Central Engineering, and managed the establishment of a state-of-the-art software factory for Cadence product development. Mike developed predictive metrics and management techniques and governance processes in advance of what have now become industry best practices. As Vice President of Quality at Sybase, he facilitated 2,000 Software Engineers through ISO 2001-TickIT certification, which remains in place today. A Principal Consultant at Savant Solutions since 1998, Mike has worked with many companies, large and small, on their software engineering practices and business processes. Clients have included Caremark/CVS, Kraft Foods, McAfee, and a host of others. He is the author of the book Successful Process Improvement published in 2006. He has also written a number of papers and taught seminars on a variety of related topics. He lives in Murphys, California and on various airlines.
