Powwows are celebrations of Native American dances, music, costumes, foods and crafts. Native peoples come together in gatherings all over North America to participate in and compete in the many events. These include men's and women's dances such as: the traditional dance, jingle dance, fancy dance, shawl dance, and grass dance. Other competitions include Iron Man events and children's games. Author Information

Bert Crowfoot, born in Gleichen, Alberta, is of Siksika/Saulteaux descent. He is a journalist, author, photographer, and television producer. In 1983 he began publishing Windspeaker, a Canadian magazine covering Aboriginal [Native American] issues, and he is founder and CEO of the Aboriginal Multimedia Society of Alberta. He established Alberta's first Aboriginal radio station (CRWE-FM), and he produced the documentary series, Quest of Buffalo Spirit. He is proud to be the great-great grandson of the legendary Blackfoot Chief Crowfoot.
