Powerful Learning Strategies that Schools Don't Teach provides a roadmap to better performance at school. Surprisingly, most high schools don't teach students HOW to learn. This book is a collection of learning strategies I developed while teaching and doing my PhD that help students to do just that; learn how to learn. Each resource has been tried and tested in high schools, forming the Learning Strategies Curriculum, and in one-on-one tutoring settings. A teaching colleague, the parent of a Year 11 student wrote that, 'The Learning Strategies Curriculum was the most important thing my daughter learned at school.' Overwhelmingly, students surveyed on the strategies find them engaging and effective, and both parents and students report strong improvement in school performance. The strategies can be used in every subject, at any year level. This includes Technical College and Tertiary students who may be struggling with learning. The book includes sections on Learning and Lifestyle, Getting Organized, Memory, The Easy Way to Learn the Times Tables, Motivation, Work Habits, Summarising: the Key to Easier Studying, Learning Challenges, Study Techniques, Assessments, and Maximising School Performance. During the eighteen years I have spent teaching high school science, I came to realize that students rarely get taught how to learn.To remedy this situation, I designed a learning strategy course that was embedded in the Year 8 science curriculum at my school.The results were so impressive, I expanded the program further and completed my PhD on the basis ofthis project and its outstanding outcomes.For the past six years, I have been tutoring students one on one using these techniques, and they have thrived.Strategies have also been developed for students with learning challenges who respond well, gaining confidence and demonstrating improved competence.Students are given the gift of learning-they finally know how to learn.
