Overview

This book addresses the design of power magnetic devices including inductors, electromagnets, transformers, and rotating electric machinery. The book sets forth a consistent and structured design approach based on multi-objective optimization techniques without assuming any background in optimization methods or more than a basic understanding of magnetic fields. The book opens with two chapters of background material - chapter 1 on optimization, and chapter 2 on magnetic fields including magnetic equivalent circuits. This material is used in chapter 3 which concerns inductor design. Chapters 4 focuses on electromagnetic force, which leads into chapter 5 on electromagnet design. Chapter 6 addresses magnetic core loss, which is used in chapter 7 on transformer design. The next two chapters concern rotating electric machinery. Chapter 8 provides a background in rotating machines, and Chapter 9 focuses on the design of permanent magnet ac machines. The book concludes with Chapter 10 on thermal analysis and Chapter 11 on high-frequency conductor losses (skin and proximity effects). Extensive case studies on inductor, electromagnet, transformer, and rotating machine design are provided in chapters 3, 5, 7, and 9, respectively. Appendices on conductors and wire gauges, selected ferrite properties, selected magnetic steel properties, and a review of phasor analysis are also included. A companion website includes extensive design and support libraries written in MATLAB. These include (i) a general purpose multi-objective optimization engine (GOSET - Genetic Optimization Systems Engineering Tool), (ii) a magnetic equivalent circuit toolbox (MEC Toolbox), (iii) a thermal equivalent circuit toolbox (TEC Toolbox), and (iv) design codes for inductors, electromagnets, transformers, and permanent magnet ac machinery. For those interested in using the work as a textbook, a set of PowerPoint slides has been developed for every chapter, which may be readily customized to suit the instructor's needs and preferences. A complete solutions manual is available to instructors.
