Power Converters for Wind Energy Conversion Systems: Modeling and Control

Overview

This book focuses on modeling, control, and implementation of power converters for Wind Energy Conversion Systems (WECS). The book begins by introducing the fundamentals of wind energy systems, including their configurations and the role of power electronics in efficiently converting mechanical energy into electrical energy. It presents a detailed classification of power converters used in modern WECS, covering conventional two-level and three-level voltage source converters, current source converters, matrix converters, and passive converters associated with polyphase generators. The second part of the book focuses on the modeling and control of power converters, providing in-depth coverage of analytical methods and advanced control strategies such as Direct Torque Control (DTC), Rotor Flux Oriented Control (RFOC), and predictive control methods. Each control approach is illustrated with examples, equations, and simulation studies, enabling readers to understand the impact of control parameters on system performance. The final section demonstrates the practical implementation of a universal wind turbine emulator based on three-phase induction motor drives and various power converter topologies. It presents experimental results validating the effectiveness of the control strategies, including torque response, flux regulation, and harmonic performance. This book is particularly relevant for graduate students, researchers, and practicing engineers working on wind energy systems, power electronics, and advanced motor drives, offering them both foundational knowledge and innovative solutions.

Author Information

Dr Imen Nouira El Badsi, is a researcher in the field of electrical engineering, specializing in power electronics, electric drives, and renewable energy systems. She obtained her engineering degree in Industrial Electronics from the Sousse Engineering School at the University of Sousse, Tunisia, in 2012, followed by a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the Sfax Engineering School, Tunisia, in 2019. She has authored several scientific articles, 4 books, and presented her work at international conferences. Her research focuses on the modeling, control, and implementation of power converters, with expertise in Direct Torque Control (DTC), Rotor Flux Oriented Control (RFOC), and Predictive Control (PTC) strategies applied to voltage-source inverters of various topologies. Dr. Nouira El Badsi’s work bridges the gap between analytical modeling, simulation, and experimental implementation. She serves as a reviewer for journals such as the International Journal of Renewable Energy Research (IJRER) and IET Control Theory & Applications, demonstrating her active engagement in advancing research in power electronics and energy conversion systems. Prof Bassem El Badsi received a BS degree in Electromechanical Engineering in 2004, MS in 2005 and PhD in 2009 in Electrical Engineering, from the Sfax Engineering School (SES) at the University of Sfax, Tunisia. He is currently a full Professor of power electronics and drives at SES, where he has been a faculty member since 2009. Prof. El Badsi is a member of the Research Laboratory on Renewable Energies and Electric Vehicles (RELEV) of the University of Sfax. His major interests are the analysis and the implementation of advanced control strategies in AC motor drives, specifically applied to automotive systems. In addition to his expertise in power electronics and drives, Prof. El Badsi is also involved in the development of renewable energy technologies. His research covers areas such as power conversion, space vector modulation, and high power electronics. He works on optimizing grid integration and enhancing power generation solutions, with a particular interest in electric vehicles and power electronics applications for renewable energy systems. Prof. El Badsi is actively contributing to the study and improvement of electric motors, power systems simulation, and harmonics in power electronics systems.
