(Oxford Times, 14 May 2004) Flying was still a fairly new and risky business in the 1920s and as such a bastion of male-domination. However, a disparate group of adventurous women had little time for such concerns and soon found ways of joining men in the skies. Hard work, great courage, (even recklessness), and a blatant flaunting of convention and decorum brought them the success and noteriorty they craved. The women varied in social status, nationality and personality, but all passionately desired the freedom of the skies and the fame wrought by their record-breaking stunts. Script-writer Mike Walker has produced an interesting and lively account of these women's lives, including the story of Pancho Barnes, the colourful clergman's wife, of Amy Johnson, Hull's down-to-earth daughter, and of media darling Amelia Earhart. All the women mentioned by Walker succeeded against the odds to prove, despite claims to the contrary, that dames could and would pilot planes. (Kirkus UK) ... an interesting, lively account...
