OverviewRecent government-sponsored studies have emphasized that in order for the US to become more competitive internationally in the synthesis and processing of advanced engineered materials, a greater importance must be placed on the education of future engineers. In order to focus more attention on issues facing the education of engineers for the specific needs of the powder processing industry, the symposium Powder Processing Education for the Year 2000 was held at the 1994 TMS Annual Meeting in San Francisco, California, February 27-March 3, 1994. This proceedings documents the presentations of a collection of distinguished speakers from the powder metals industries, universities and national laboratories interested in the future development of powder processing education. Coverage includes: educational requirements and challenges in processing high technology P/M materials; the plight of fragmented manufacturing industries - development of the human capital; expectations from a powder processing engineer; development of course modules for powder processing education; powder processing education - a technical supervisor's view; and on-line searching for powder metallurgy information at Chemical Abstracts Service.
