Powder Plant: Farmland to National Defense

Overview

For thirty years, Carolyn Dallmann held down various positions at the Badger Army Ammunition Plant, in Sauk County, Wisconsin. A major manufacturer of gunpowder and other nitrocellulose-based propellants, Badger played a vital and controversial role in the life of central Wisconsin throughout the latter half of the twentieth century. Follow Dallmann as she recounts her time there, from water testing, chemistry, and auditing, to explosions, the Vietnam War, bombings, and environmental decline. Told with immediacy and tenderness, Powder Plant is not only a rich personal history but also a remarkable catalogue of a world in chaos.

Reviews

""Dallmann writes with rustic authority and a rural authenticity."" -Marc Seals, University of Wisconsin-Platteville Baraboo Sauk County ""Finally, a woman who actually worked in America's military-industrial complex tells her story. It's gritty, fascinating, and completely absorbing. If you love memoirs that uncover hidden histories, don't miss this one."" -Linda Saether, author of What We Can't Forget ""A fascinating look into an often unheralded aspect of the Army's logistical tail that sustained America's soldiers through three wars."" -Richard S. Brown, author of Going Off the Rails ""Dallmann writes as if she were talking to you about her many experiences working as a laboratory technician at the Badger Plant. She writes as if it were a personal conversation of her experiences. . . . very informative."" -Frank Wolf, Badger History Group
