Pour My Heart Out

Overview

Pour My Heart Out is the debut poetry collection from Indigenous poet Irene Bird. The stunning vulnerability and authenticity of journal writing meets the frank artfulness of Bird's poetics as she chronicles her journey through hurt and heartbreak to healing. Fearlessly, unapologetically engaging with the complexities of substance abuse and recovery, trauma, and mental health, Pour My Heart Out faces pain and celebrates survival and love. It is a collection that ultimately recognizes the beauty of life and the land. ""We're not stuck, we're striving . . . surviving.""

Author Information

Irene Bird is from Peguis First Nation, Treaty One, Manitoba. From a young age, Irene spent her time writing poetry and spending time on the land, often commercial fishing with her family. Her premier book, Pour My Heart Out, pays homage to her high school English teacher, Nicole, who encouraged and supported Irene as she honed her talent. Hoping to open the eyes of young poets and inspire others, Irene details her journey of self-discovery, addictions, and navigating newfound strength in forgiving the past and allowing oneself to heal.
