Overview

Who would have thought that a witch from centuries long past could manifest herself in a peaceful village in Cornwall, England? But here are the ruins of Tintagel Castle high above the sea, and here is a cave known as Merlin's Cave. Emily, now that World War II is ending, yearns for her family to be together again on their holiday. She wants to study to pass her A-levels and get into Cambridge University but is overwhelmed by weird visions. They start in a dream when she sees a pathetic female dressed in torn clothes, croaking and waving her arms in the air. This ancient witch menaces not only her, but also her brother, Byron, whose odd behavior becomes increasingly dangerous. Warning voices sound in her head and at first she is too frightened to understand. But after she accepts that she is actually hearing Merlin, the famous wizard, she knows that she must face her fears from her painful war memories in order to save her brother. Christina St. Clair is an award-winning writer with several published novels to her credit. She was born and raised in England, has been a shop girl in London, an au-pair in Paris, a chemist in Pittsburgh, and a pastor/spiritual director in Kentucky. Her paranormal fantasy, 'Possession, ' is the first in a trilogy of young adult books that include 'Dark, ' and 'Psychic.' These books arise from her memories of England after WWII ended when there was still food rationing, when rubble from bombs still littered the streets, when there was hardly any fuel, and when there were still housing shortages. Even though the war was over, it was a dark time. These novels contain much about common life in England in places she has lived and loved: Tintagel where she has been on holiday, Blackheath near her home in Sydenham, and Cambridge where she dreamed of becoming a university scholar.
