Excerpt from Portraits of Christopher Columbus That which Columbus tells us about his studies is nearly all that we know about the mat ter. One of his letters to Ferdinand and Isa bella shows us that to the theories of the period he joined an experience of twenty-three years of navigation, that he had seen all the Levant, the Occ1dent and the North; that he had Visited Eng land and made several voyages to Lisbon and the coasts of Guinea. He also speaks himself of an excursion that he made to Chios, and of an expo dition to Tunis of which he was given charge by King Rena of Anjou. But of all these divers voyages we possess no pre01se information suf ficient to fix the dates, still less the Circum stances.
