Portrait of Grace

Overview

This true story weaves the history of the early twentieth century and artist, Mary Grace Wible, through her journey of independence, determination, and adventure. From her first breath, Mary Grace had to endure the difficult situation she had been born into. It was a turbulent world that her mother, Luetta created, but fault could not be placed on her. It was one of those life challenges that fate created and up to Mary Grace how it would influence her. Born in 1911 in rural Three Springs, Pennsylvania, Mary Grace Wible had to learn self-reliance from a young age. Join this independent woman as she struggles to get her college degree while working summers as a nanny in Philadelphia's posh Main Line community, and at the fancy Marlborough Hotel in Atlantic City during prohibition. She progressed from an eighteen-year-old teacher in a one-room schoolhouse during the Great Depression to a college professor. Her education stretched beyond the halls of West Chester Teachers College and Penn State College; she learned how to fly a Piper Cub in Lock Haven, operate a crane in Bradford during World War II, and painted alongside famous artists around the world. She did not always have full control over her life, but she molded her life to achieve her goals using patience and persistence. Her passion for travel kept her moving with a paintbrush in one hand and a tourist suitcase in the other. Mary Grace traveled the world in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, experiencing exotic art and culture while struggling with the decision on a marriage proposal along the way. She found all her travels to be learning experiences, especially her four-month voyage around the world on a freighter ship in 1961. Portrait of Grace illustrates how events and decisions, large and small, can change life's direction. These changes, whether positive or negative, are essential to giving one the experiences that are needed to grow.
