OverviewTo keep the pool clean and avoid future problems with algae, corrosion and build-up, it is essential to test the water regularly. A good rule of thumb is to test your pool water two to three times a week during the summer, and once a week during the winter. If you decide to test your pool water yourself, good testing equipment is essential. Look for easy-to-use strips that allow you to test the following: 1. pH - This is the measure of the acid and base of the pool water, and it is important to maintain the right balance: If the pH of the pool water drifts too much towards the acid side of the scale, corrosion of the surfaces can occur and the pool equipment. If the pH is too far from the bottom side, the pool may be at risk of scale, deposits and cloudy water. Ideally, keep a pH of around 7.5. You can use a chemical increase or decrease to adjust the levels in your pool as needed. Be sure to follow the label directions for the proper amount of products to add based on test results and pool size. 2. Calcium hardness - It is the amount of calcium dissolved in the pool water. Low levels of calcium hardness can cause etching of plaster finishes and shorten the life of vinyl siding. High levels of calcium can cause calcium deposits on pool surfaces and equipment. The proper range for calcium hardness in pool water is 200 to 250 parts per million (ppm) for concrete pools and 175 to 225 ppm for vinyl pools. Your pool professional can advise you on the best method of treating your pool if you find a high calcium hardness. Want more tips? Get this book now.
