Reviews

Pooky Plays Piano is a delightful, fun, and modern introduction to playing piano which includes composition, sight reading, duets, musical games, and writing exercises. Furnished with colourful characters, stories, and illustrations the book goes beyond the traditional piano teaching curriculum. Emilia's upbeat learning style includes an important pre-staff notation stage before transitioning to reading on the grand staff. Many of the pieces are thoughtfully designed as black key duets which encourages students to go beyond middle C centered pieces and to gain confidence playing all twelve notes. With the addition of lyrics to many of the pieces, students are equipped with a holistic music training by learning to play and sing simultaneously. The refreshingly delightful melodies are written with awareness to the size of a child's small hands all while being supported by rich and florid parent/teacher accompaniments. Creativity shines through in this delightful and colourful book and composition is promoted from the very beginning, something sadly often overlooked by many other method books. Color highlighting is used for concept emphasis and is a welcome addition to the many grayscale beginner piano books available today. With Pooky encouraging the young beginner student to think, sing, feel, create, play, and develop musically every step of the way, Pooky Plays Piano is the ideal first music book and provides an excellent path to musical development for any child. Tim Treacy, Pi Kappa Lambda BA (mus), Grad Dip., MA, DMA (ABD)
