Pony the Snail

Overview

Jack was ready to make his day a great one! Eager to get out and have some fun, he heads outside to play. While riding bikes, using his imagination, and taking time to watch the clouds, he doesn't realize that he is about to meet someone very special. Pony the Snail is a classic tale of two different people, or in this case a little boy and a snail, who come together to form a lasting friendship.

Author Information

Author Crystal Swanson received her BA in English with a minor in Education from the University of California, Santa Barbara. She decided to delay becoming a teacher in order to start her family. Crystal and her husband have been blessed with two handsome little guys, and she is now a stay-at-home mom who loves to be actively involved in her boys' busy lives. Writing has always been one of her biggest passions, so when she's not volunteering at her son's school or helping out with cub scouts, she is always eager to find time to write. Crystal gets inspiration for her stories from her boys: their unending passion for fun and imaginative play, the gift of seeing our world through their creative eyes. Pony the Snail is no exception. In an effort to help her youngest son work through his fear of snails, Crystal encouraged her son to view the slow-moving creatures with the whimsical shells as harmless and fun to observe. She did her job so well, that once his fear was gone, he asked her to write about his new friends - one very special snail in particular - and Pony the Snail was born. Illustrator Ryan Cohen is currently a student in his last year at California Lutheran University majoring in Art. Originally interested in pursuing graphic design, Ryan quickly re-discovered his passion for painting and illustration since the creative freedom and imaginative processes that are involved with both are more fun, challenging, and rewarding than the limitations of graphic design. From a young age his parents noticed an artistic talent, but he has never really had a lot of opportunity to learn and expand his artistic interests and experience until recently in his art classes at CLU. During his years at CLU, he has even had one of his paintings featured in a show and on display for a couple months at the Santa Paula Museum of Art, and is looking forward to his Senior Show in the school's Roland Gallery in the Spring of 2017. Not only artistically skilled, Ryan is an outstanding academic student, being among the top 5 students in his class, he attributes his academic excellence to believing there's always room for improvement and something new to always learn. Ryan would love one day to work for either Disney or Pixar as a Story Artist or Visual Development Artist, since he is inspired by the way they are effortlessly able to make an idea come to life by evoking emotions that transcend beyond their artwork and their stories. The only thing he is more passionate about than art is pizza, but always finds time for In-N-Out Mondays with his friend Tim as well as playing video games to wind down from a long day. He is extremely grateful for having met Crystal and being given the opportunity to illustrate her book, Pony the Snail. Ryan is excited to be able to share his visualization of this amazing and fun-filled story with all of you, and he hopes that you all enjoy it as much as he has.
