OverviewHave you ever wondered what the difference between a pony and a miniature horse is? Sometimes we tend to think of them both as small horses and by definition they are, but when we really begin to study ponies and miniature horses they surprize us by being very different and unique. A pony is a small horse that stands less than 14.2 hands high, to put that in perspective, a hand measures 4 inches so that would be (147 cm or 58 inches). A pony can be any breed but there are also many breeds of ponies. The Highlander pony comes from the Scottish Highlands and in the early days they were used to pack out game from the rough Highland terrain. The Shetland, Dartmoor and Dale ponies came from Southern England and were used for pit mining in the early days because of their hardiness and strength. These ponies were very adaptable and could work all day under a heavy load. There are also the beautiful and talented Welsh ponies, to name a few. In today's world these ponies from England, Scotland and Wales make excellent riding ponies and dominate the show ring. Miniature Horses are commonly called (Minis) and originated in Europe in the 1600's. They are very small, much smaller than ponies, and the standard size requirement for most registries is under 38 inches from the withers. Minis are too small to be ridden by anyone other than young children. Minis are popular all around the world because of their cuteness and sweet disposition. Used predominately for driving they can be seen hitched to carts, wagons and sleighs. Minis are useful for novices and professionals alike and you will find them in parades, the show ring and many areas of competition. They make outstanding pets, therapy horses and companion horses, especially for the elderly and those with special needs.
