Pom Pom The Ibis

Overview

A picture book about a real Ibis, rescued, raised and released! This story is based on the true story of an Australian national treasure - often misunderstood, but a truly special bird. White Ibis are an Australian icon. Originally hailing from the Sunshine State (Queensland) they were introduced to New South Wales in the 1970's. They migrated from North Shore areas and set up the first out of program colony in Bankstown. Ibis, with their incredibly sensitive beaks, were able to dig and rummage to find food in all parts of society. Being omnivorous, they could eat almost anything. They changed their breeding cycles to be able to raise families any time of year and have adapted to raising their families during the months that the majority of other birds are not, thus reducing resource competition and lowering predatory risks for their young families. Ibis also fly efficiently, using the wind against their huge, sail-like wings, to glide long distances and soar to the heights of their nests, atop towering palm trees. Because they have no official defense mechanisms, they are susceptible to harm from anything bigger than them, but because they are large birds, this attribute helps to prevent harm from other birds. Their personalities are big and very unique. They are amicable towards other animals and people that they trust and can really form strong bonds. Pom Pom is the story of one of many gorgeous Ibis that needed human help.
