OverviewThe polymer industry is one of the dominant, most progressive economic forces in the world. The plastics industry produces 150 million tons a year and is more than twice as large as the steel industry. The foundations of polymer science were laid down in the mid-1920s and today, approximately 4500 patents and 60,000 technical papers are published on polymer blends annually. Consequently, it is increasingly difficult to keep up with the flood of new information. This handbook presents the broadest spectrum of topics on diverse aspects of polymer blend science and technology, and provides numerical values of parameters that characterize either polymer blends or define their performance characteristics. The text can be divided into two parts. The first begins with a general, historical introduction, and then discusses the fundamental principles of thermodynamics, crystallization, compatibilization, principles of preparation of the interpenetrating polymer networks (IPN), rheology and morphology. The second part is directed toward polymer blend technology and contains discussions of compounding, processing, and use of high-energy irradiation. This section also includes a description of properties, performance, applications of blends, as well as of their longevity (chemical and physical aging), the characteristics and performance of commercial blends, the role of blend technology in polymer recycling, and finally predictions for future trends in the field.
